Bankalar Caddesi, historically known as Voyvoda Caddesi, was the financial heart of late Ottoman Istanbul and the center of Galata’s banking district. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, major Ottoman and foreign banks, insurance firms, and trading houses lined this street, reflecting the district’s role in global commerce. Its architecture is marked by elegant stone facades, neoclassical and eclectic details, high entrances, and solid commercial blocks that convey prestige and stability. Walking here offers a compact view of Istanbul’s transition into modern finance and urban life.

Getting there: The nearest stop is Şişhane Metro Station (M2), about 450 m away, around 6–7 minutes on foot downhill toward Karaköy. Karaköy Tram Stop (T1) is also convenient, roughly 500 m away and about 7 minutes walking uphill.

Note: This is an open street best explored on foot, ideally in daylight when architectural details are easiest to appreciate. The area is sloped and paved with uneven surfaces in places, so comfortable shoes are recommended. Weekday business hours bring more local activity, while mornings are generally quieter for photography.
