Sultanahmet Square is the historic heart of old Constantinople and Ottoman Istanbul, occupying the former Hippodrome of Constantinople where chariot races, imperial ceremonies, and public gatherings once took place. Today the open square preserves fragments of that layered past, including the Egyptian Obelisk, the Serpent Column, and the Walled Obelisk, set within landscaped paths and lawns. Its broad pedestrian layout is framed by some of the city’s most important monuments, especially the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia, giving the area a monumental yet accessible character. The mix of Byzantine remains, Ottoman surroundings, and modern public park design makes it one of Istanbul’s clearest open-air history sites.

Getting there: Sultanahmet Tram Stop is about 250 m away, roughly a 3–4 minute walk; Marmaray Sirkeci Station is around 1.4 km away, about 18 minutes on foot or a short tram connection.

Note: Free to enter at all hours as a public square, but it is busiest from late morning to sunset when tour groups are most active. Wear comfortable shoes because the area is large and partly paved with uneven historic stone surfaces. For quieter photos, come early in the morning or around dusk, and carry water plus sun protection in warmer months.
