Yedikule Fortress

About this place

Yedikule Hisarı, also known as the Fortress of Seven Towers, is one of Istanbul’s most important late Byzantine and early Ottoman defensive monuments. Built in the 5th century around the monumental Golden Gate and expanded after the conquest of Constantinople, it later served as a treasury, garrison, and state prison. Its massive stone walls, towers, and inner courtyards reflect a layered military architecture shaped by both Byzantine ceremonial design and Ottoman fortification needs.

Getting there: The nearest Marmaray stop is Yedikule, about 700 m away, roughly a 9–10 minute walk. Several city buses also stop around Yedikule and Imrahor, usually within 300–500 m of the entrance.

Note: Wear comfortable shoes, as the fortress grounds include uneven stone surfaces, stairs, and open-air sections. Summer afternoons can be hot with limited shade on the ramparts, so water, sun protection, and an early or late visit are recommended for a more comfortable experience.
