About this place

Housed in the 16th-century Ibrahim Pasha Palace facing Sultanahmet Square, the Turkish & Islamic Arts Museum is one of Istanbul’s most important collections of Islamic material culture. The building is a rare surviving example of an Ottoman civil palace, combining monumental stone architecture with elegant courtyards and arcaded spaces. Inside, galleries present carpets, calligraphy, manuscripts, woodwork, ceramics, metalwork, and ethnographic interiors spanning many centuries. Its setting and collection make it especially valuable for understanding the artistic traditions of the Ottoman world and the broader Islamic sphere.

Getting there: Sultanahmet Tram Stop is about 250 m away, around a 3–4 minute walk; Cankurtaran Marmaray Station is roughly 900 m away, about 12 minutes on foot.

Note: Arrive earlier in the day for a quieter visit, especially in peak summer and on weekends when Sultanahmet gets crowded. Allow extra time for the carpet and manuscript sections, which are among the highlights. Comfortable shoes are useful because the museum visit is often combined with nearby historic sites in the square.
