The Prinkipo Greek Orthodox Orphanage on Büyükada is one of the largest wooden buildings in Europe and a remarkable survivor of late 19th-century architecture. Designed with a grand timber frame and elaborate façades, it was originally built as a luxury hotel before becoming an orphanage for the Greek Orthodox community. Its scale, craftsmanship, and dramatic hilltop setting make it an important landmark in Istanbul’s multicultural history. Though long abandoned and not functioning as a regular museum, it remains a powerful symbol of memory, heritage, and preservation debates.

Getting there: From Büyükada Ferry Pier, the site is about 2,700 m away, around 35–45 minutes on foot uphill; local electric island vehicles or taxis can shorten the approach, followed by a brief walk.

Note: The building is generally viewed from outside and access to the structure itself is typically restricted for safety and conservation reasons. Wear comfortable shoes for the island’s sloping roads, bring water in warm weather, and visit in daylight for clearer views and easier walking conditions.
