Greek Orthodox Monastery of St George Koudounas (Prince’s islands)
Aya Yorgi Manastırı

About this place
The Greek Orthodox Monastery of St George Koudounas is one of Büyükada’s most revered pilgrimage sites, associated with centuries of devotion and local legend. The present complex reflects a modest Orthodox monastic character, with a simple chapel, religious interiors, and a hilltop setting that gives the site its spiritual atmosphere. Its architecture is restrained rather than monumental, shaped by practical rebuilding over time and by the traditions of island monastic life. The monastery is especially known for its annual feast day and for the panoramic views from Yücetepe, the island’s highest area.
Getting there: From Büyükada Ferry Pier, the monastery is about 3,000 m away; the uphill walk usually takes 45–60 minutes. Visitors typically follow the route toward Yücetepe via Nizam and Sanatoryum Yolu, with the final section being a steep ascent.
Note: As this is an active Orthodox religious site, dress modestly and keep voices low inside the chapel and prayer areas. The climb can be hot and demanding in summer, so bring water, sun protection, and comfortable walking shoes; mornings are usually cooler and less crowded.
