The Kamondo Stairs are a late-19th-century urban landmark commissioned by the influential Kamondo family, prominent Ottoman bankers of Jewish heritage. Built in an elegant Art Nouveau style with subtle Neo-Baroque curves, the double-flight staircase is admired for its flowing, symmetrical form. Beyond serving as a practical link between streets, it reflects the cosmopolitan character of Galata during a period of intense commercial and cultural exchange. Today it remains one of Istanbul’s most photographed historic details and a small but memorable stop for architecture lovers.

Getting there: The nearest stop is Şişhane Metro Station (M2), about 450 m away, around 6–8 minutes on foot downhill toward Bankalar Caddesi. Karaköy Tram Stop (T1) is also convenient, roughly 500 m away and about 7–9 minutes walking uphill. Several buses stop around Karaköy and Perşembe Pazarı, followed by a short walk.

Note: This is an open-air historic site with no ticket booth, and visits are usually brief unless combined with a Galata or Karaköy walk. Early morning is best for unobstructed photos, while afternoons can be busier with tour groups and photo shoots. Wear comfortable shoes, as the surrounding streets are steep, paved, and can be slippery in wet weather.
