About this place

The Yeni Mosque, also known as the New Mosque, is one of Istanbul’s great imperial mosques and a defining landmark of Eminönü Square. Begun in 1597 and completed in 1665, it reflects the classical Ottoman style with a cascading dome system, elegant semi-domes, a spacious courtyard, and richly decorated interiors with İznik tiles and gilded details. Its long construction history connects it to the power and patronage of the Ottoman court, especially royal women who sponsored major public works. Standing beside the historic waterfront and Spice Bazaar, it remains both an active place of worship and a major symbol of the city’s historic skyline.

Getting there: Eminönü tram stop is about 150 m away, around 2 minutes on foot; the Eminönü ferry piers are roughly 250 m away, about 4 minutes walking.

Note: Modest clothing is recommended; women may need a headscarf, and visitors should remove shoes before entering the prayer hall. Non-Muslim visitors should avoid prayer times, especially Friday noon prayers, and keep voices low inside.

Entry is free for all visitors; no adult, student, or child ticket tiers. Donations may be accepted but are voluntary. Visit outside prayer times and modest dress is required.
