Nusretiye Mosque

Nusretiye Mosque is a 19th-century imperial Ottoman mosque commissioned by Sultan Mahmud II and completed in 1826, reflecting the reform era of the empire. Designed in an elegant Ottoman Baroque style, it stands out with its slender minarets, richly carved stonework, large windows, and flowing decorative details. The mosque was built near Tophane to serve both the surrounding district and the nearby military-artillery complex, giving it historical importance beyond its religious role. Its bright interior and refined proportions make it one of Istanbul’s notable late Ottoman monuments.

Getting there: Tophane Tram Stop (T1) is about 250 m away, around 3–4 minutes on foot; Fındıklı Marmaray Station is roughly 700 m away, about 9–10 minutes walking.

Note: As an active mosque, visitors should dress modestly; women are advised to cover their hair, and shoes must be removed before entering. Avoid visiting during prayer times, especially Friday noon prayer, when access for tourists may be limited. Early morning or mid-afternoon usually offers a quieter atmosphere for respectful sightseeing and photography.
