About this place

The Grand Bazaar is one of the world’s oldest and largest covered markets, founded in the 15th century soon after the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople. Its vaulted lanes, domed passages, hans, and caravanserai-style layout reflect classical Ottoman commercial architecture shaped over centuries by fires, repairs, and expansion. More than a shopping venue, it has long served as a social and economic heart of Istanbul, where traditional crafts, jewelry, carpets, leather goods, and antiques remain central to its identity.

Getting there: The nearest stop is Beyazıt–Kapalıçarşı Tram Station on the T1 line, about 250 m away, roughly a 4-minute walk to one of the main entrances. It is also reachable from Vezneciler Metro Station in around 700 m, about 10 minutes on foot.

Note: Visit in the morning for a calmer experience, as the bazaar becomes crowded from late morning through afternoon, especially on weekends and during holiday periods. Bargaining is common in many shops, but compare prices between several lanes before buying, and keep cash plus a card for flexibility.
