Church of Saint Anthony of Padua

About this place

The Church of Saint Anthony of Padua is the largest Catholic church in Istanbul and one of the most recognizable religious landmarks on İstiklal Avenue. Built between 1906 and 1912 by the Levantine community, it reflects Neo-Gothic and Italianate influences with a striking red-brick façade, pointed arches, rose window, and a calm inner courtyard set back from the busy street. Its elegant interior, high vaulted space, stained glass, and devotional atmosphere make it important both historically and architecturally.

Getting there: The nearest stop is Taksim Metro Station (M2), about 700 m away, around 9–10 minutes on foot via İstiklal Avenue. Tünel tram/funicular area is also about 750 m away, roughly a 10-minute walk.

Note: Modest clothing is recommended as this is an active church used for worship and services. Visit outside mass hours for a quieter experience, and keep voices low since people may be praying inside.
