Saint Stephen’s Bulgarian Orthodox Church, known for its rare prefabricated cast-iron structure, is one of Istanbul’s most distinctive 19th-century churches. Built between 1892 and 1898 on the Golden Horn, it reflects Neo-Gothic and Neo-Baroque influences with richly detailed façades, slender ornament, and a bright, elegant interior. The church was commissioned for the Bulgarian Orthodox community during a period of growing national and religious identity within the late Ottoman Empire. Its iron elements were manufactured in Vienna and assembled in Istanbul, making it an exceptional example of industrial-age ecclesiastical architecture.

Getting there: The nearest stop is Fener bus stop, about 250 m away, roughly a 3–4 minute walk. From Eminönü, buses along the Golden Horn reach the area conveniently, and Balat’s waterfront route is the easiest approach on foot.

Note: As this is an active church, visitors should dress modestly and keep voices low, especially during services or religious ceremonies. Photography is usually possible in a respectful manner, but avoid flash and do not disturb worshippers.
